Hebrew Roots Refuted: NEW COVENANT or RENEWED COVENANT

NEW COVENANT

This is the basis for Christianity and this is the very thing that the Hebrew Roots Movement seeks to undermine through their deception. By proclaiming the Mosaic Covenant to be “RENEWED”, they bring their listeners into bondage.  Many may not have heard of this group, but it is extremely deceptive and dangerous. Families have been broken, churches have been divided, and lives have been destroyed in the aftermath of this growing movement. It’s heresies and false teachings, such as Sabbath worship, pork abstinence, sacred name-ism, and feast keeping lead people away from saving faith in JESUS. Here we will discuss one of their most popular false teachings.

They claim that there is no such thing as the NEW COVENANT. Instead, they use very deceptive tactics and claim that the COVENANT that GOD made with ISRAEL was merely RENEWED.

So, do we have a “NEW” COVENANT or a “RENEWED” COVENANT?

For this passage we will go to the proof text, Jeremiah 31:31, which states:

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:  (Jer 31:31)

In this verse, we see clearly the word “NEW”. They claim that this word actually means “RENEWED” in the Hebrew and that the Mosaic Covenant is still binding. So, what does this word mean? In the Hebrew, it actually means “fresh, new thing” according to Strong’s dictionary. In fact, Strong’s dictionary assigns numeric ID’s for each Hebrew word and the word “NEW” (H2319) and “RENEW” (H2318) are two different numbers. Here is the word “NEW” compared to the word “RENEW” according to Stong’s dictionary

NEW חָדָשׁ  ḥāḏāš H2319

RENEW חָדַשׁ  ḥāḏaš H2318

As you can see, in the Hebrew, even though they are similar there is a difference. The vowel inflection actually makes it a completely different word. Much like “new” and “renew” are only separated by the prefix “re” in English. But that simple prefix changes the whole meaning. We have the very same thing illustrated here in the Hebrew.  And the Hebrew Roots Deceivers are counting on you and I not knowing this difference. The Hebrew pointing system makes a clear distinction between these two words plainly seen in Strong’s dictionary.

Why would they want to confuse their hearers and lie about this?

To move them from simple faith in the FINISHED word of JESUS on the cross and to place the listener back under the law. Eventually, the goal is to get them to deny JESUS (GOD manifest in the flesh).

But let’s go to the Word of God for our final refutation of this false teaching. In the VERY NEXT VERSE in Jeremiah chapter 31, it is clear that a completely NEW COVENANT will come.

Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day [that] I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:  (Jer 31:32)

The key part of verse 32 is “NOT ACCORDING TO THE COVENANT THAT I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS”. This verse completely refutes any notion that God simply “RENEWED” the Mosaic covenant through Jesus. No, Jesus brought in a New Covenant and it is not like the one that was made with their fathers. Let’s look at some New Testament verse to illustrate this point. In Hebrews 8:7-9, you will see that the Holy Spirit actually quotes from this passage in Jeremiah to prove the point.

For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.  (Heb 8:7) For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:  (Heb 8:8) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.  (Heb 8:9)

By quoting that same passage from Jeremiah, we have absolutely irrefutable evidence that GOD was bringing in a NEW COVENANT through JESUS. This whole chapter in Hebrews 8 has authoritative context regarding the covenant. No matter how convincing their lies may be, we can stand on the WORD of GOD to refute this false teaching.

Our New Covenant speaks of better things, with a final sacrifice for sins and is EVERLASTING…

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,  (Heb 13:20)

Don’t let anyone move you from the WORD of GOD being your final authority. These false teachers will aim to undermine your faith in GOD’s WORD. We know that this is the very same tactic that the devil used in the garden of Eden. Our enemy is a liar and a deceiver and seeks to question what GOD has said. But praise the LORD that we have been given the Spirit of Truth leading us into all truth! The Holy Spirit will always point us back to our Savior JESUS CHRIST, who is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE and who by HIS BLOOD became the MEDIATOR of the “NEW” COVENANT!!

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel.  (Heb 12:24)

In Christ,
